Book Review

Agamid Lizards by Ulrich Manthey and Norbert Schuster
1996. TFH Publications. 189 pages. ISBN: 0793801281.

This book was originally published in German as Agamen.

Ulrich and Schuster do an excellent job of covering the diverse Agamidae family in the terrarium. The book begins by describing the characteristics of agamid lizards, then goes into general consideration for keeping agamids (and any lizard) in captivity.

The meat of the book is the large section of species accounts, including information on natural habitat and habits, and any knowledge on their care in captivity. While certain rarer species do not have much information included, it is still an excellent starting point. More popular species, such as water dragons (Physignathus sp.), spiny-tailed agamas (Uromastyx sp.), and particularly, bearded dragons (Pogona sp.) have several pages or more each to describe their lifestyles and care.

If you have a special interest in agamid lizards, or would just like additional information on commonly kept agamid species, this book is a good investment.
